Dear members of IN.TUM,
these days, there are quite a lot of events of "the-last" style: A couple of
weeks ago, there was the last IN.TUM Summer Party; I'm writing this text
just two hours before the last meeting of the IN.TUM Department Council
(Fakultätsrat); and we're going to hand out the last doctoral
certificates as
IN.TUM. I think it is quite natural that, every time someone realizes and
mentions one of these "last-time" occasions, some nostalgia is coming up:
The thirty years of our department are a success story - from the first step
of emancipation in 1992 to the eve of our new CIT school; a success story
made possible by the many valuable contributions of all members of our
family, be it faculty, scientific employees, non-scientific employees, or
students.
However, it's not only the end of something we are approaching,
October 1st also marks a beginning: the launch of our new TUM School
of CIT, with about 150 professors, 14,000 students (I stop here - you
must have heard the numbers several times by now ...). A lot of
preparation work has already been done, the first (note: now it's
"the-first" style!!) elections led to the first School Council, Department
Heads, and Dean of the school, and two celebrations will mark the
start of the era: a more internal and informal one on October 5, and
the official one on January 24.
Finally, to mention something else of extreme importance - news from
the construction site. The first new building of the EI department was
opened in May; on July 11, there was the roofing ceremony of the
new Siemens Technology Center on Garching campus (which will
also host our robotics and autonomous systems groups - at the nice
address Friedrich-Ludwig-Bauer-Straße 3); the new SAP building next
to it (which will host various projects with also a significant number of
IN.TUM researchers) is growing at similar pace; and the planning for
the building donated by the Dieter-Schwarz-Stiftung (which will host
our data and vision/imaging groups as well as the MDSI) is moving
forward. Hence, starting in two years from now, there should be a
significant relief concerning our severe space problems. Let's hope that
there won't be too much impact on the schedule due to the various
crises we have ...
All the best, and enjoy the summer (the last IN.TUM one ;-))
Hans-Joachim Bungartz
Dean of the Department of Informatics
